Rajamangala University of Technology Lanna (RMUTL) continues to promote education for sustainable development through dedicated academic courses, general education electives, and specialized degree programmes addressing environmental, social, and economic challenges. By incorporating sustainability-related knowledge into its academic offerings, the university provides students with opportunities to develop the competencies needed to contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Dedicated Sustainability Courses in General Education

RMUTL’s general education curriculum includes courses specifically designed to develop students’ understanding of sustainability and responsible development. These courses provide opportunities for students from different academic disciplines to explore environmental issues, sustainable resource management, and the relationship between human activities and the natural environment.

One of the university’s dedicated courses is GEBSC305 – Environment and Sustainable Development (3 credits). The course examines natural resources, ecosystems, environmental challenges, climate change, environmental legislation, and environmental impact assessment. Students also explore renewable and environmentally friendly energy sources, green technologies, and innovative approaches to environmental conservation.

Another sustainability-focused course is GEBSO507 – The King’s Philosophy and Sustainable Development (3 credits). This course explores principles of sustainable development through the King’s Philosophy, emphasizing responsible resource management, self-reliance, community development, and the application of sustainable development principles in everyday life.

Both courses are listed in RMUTL’s official general education curriculum and are directly associated with sustainability-related learning outcomes. Course documentation for the 2025 academic year also demonstrates their inclusion in the university’s teaching framework.

Environmental Engineering: A Dedicated Degree Programme for Sustainability

Beyond general education, RMUTL offers the Bachelor of Engineering Programme in Environmental Engineering, a specialized undergraduate degree designed to prepare graduates to address environmental challenges through engineering knowledge, technical innovation, and professional practice.

The programme provides comprehensive education in environmental protection, pollution prevention, water resources management, waste management, and environmental systems.

Its curriculum includes several sustainability-related subjects, such as:

  • ENGEV203 – Water Supply Engineering
  • ENGEV204 – Wastewater Engineering
  • ENGEV303 – Air Pollution and Noise Control and Design
  • ENGEV401 – Solid Waste Management
  • ENGEV402 – Environmental Systems and Management
  • ENGEV407 – Environmental Impact Assessment
  • ENGEV409 – Hazardous Waste Management

Additional professional elective courses, including Water Quality Management, Ecological Engineering, Pollution Prevention, and New Technology for Water and Wastewater Treatment, allow students to deepen their expertise in specific areas of environmental sustainability.

Through this specialized programme, students develop technical competencies relevant to clean water and sanitation, sustainable cities, responsible consumption and production, climate action, and the protection of natural ecosystems.

Connecting Academic Knowledge with Sustainable Development

RMUTL’s approach to sustainability education combines general education subjects with specialized professional programmes, enabling students to engage with sustainable development from different academic perspectives.

The general education courses encourage students to understand environmental responsibility and sustainable development principles, while specialized engineering courses provide practical knowledge and technical approaches to solving environmental problems.

Together, these academic offerings demonstrate RMUTL’s commitment to providing dedicated courses and degree programmes that address sustainability and the Sustainable Development Goals.

By strengthening sustainability-related education through formal academic curricula, RMUTL supports the development of graduates equipped with the knowledge, professional skills, and social responsibility needed to contribute to a more sustainable future.
