Striving Toward Energy Efficiency
RMUTL has implemented a comprehensive Energy Conservation Policy & Measures (2024) across the whole university—including its main campus in Chiang Mai and regional campuses such as Chiang Rai—to significantly reduce overall energy consumption. The policy defines a clear 5% electricity reduction target for 2024 and promotes effective energy management, adherence to national efficiency standards, and the cultivation of responsible energy practices among students, faculty, and staff.
Key actions include the mandatory shutdown of air-conditioning units when not in use and the establishment of standard operating schedules in meeting rooms—systems must be switched on only shortly before meetings and turned off immediately afterward. To optimize energy usage, air conditioning is permitted only between 10:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., with a lunch-hour pause from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. In line with Thailand’s energy conservation regulations, all air-conditioning units must be set at a temperature no lower than 25°C.
In addition, RMUTL is carrying out structural improvements such as the installation of window and door screens to increase natural ventilation and reduce reliance on air conditioning. The university also introduced usage control measures for electrical appliances, including refrigerators, water coolers, and electric kettles, with designated operating hours to avoid unnecessary energy consumption.
Through these integrated efforts, RMUTL is fostering a culture of sustainability and environmental stewardship, reinforcing its long-term commitment to energy efficiency, carbon reduction, and sustainable campus development.
The Chiang Rai Energy Conservation Policy (March 28, 2024) establishes a quantified 5% reduction goal in electricity consumption and mandates campus-wide participation and monitoring. The accompanying Energy Conservation Measures 2024 outline detailed behavioral and technical actions, including operational temperature control, lighting schedules, and an internal feedback/complaint mechanism for continuous improvement. At the university level, SDGs and Carbon Neutral workshops held in August 2024 reinforced the dissemination of this plan and its adoption across all RMUTL campuses.
