RMUTL continues to strengthen its commitment to clean energy, carbon neutrality, and sustainable campus operations through a series of strategic collaborations, policy dialogues, and academic initiatives. While the university has not yet released a formal public declaration to achieve 100 % renewable energy, several institutional actions between May 2022 and October 2024 demonstrate a clear trajectory toward that goal.
Green University Partnership: Commitment to Clean Power and EV Transition
On 15 October 2024, RMUTL signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with three private-sector partners to jointly develop the “Green University” initiative. The agreement promotes the use of renewable energy, particularly solar power, and encourages the adoption of electric vehicles and electric motorcycles across campus operations. The collaboration emphasizes shared research, innovation, and infrastructure investment in clean energy technologies. It also aims to create a model campus powered by renewable sources and to showcase the feasibility of green mobility and low-carbon energy systems to external stakeholders. This partnership represents RMUTL’s tangible step toward a 100 % clean-power vision, contributing to Thailand’s broader transition to sustainable energy.
“Carbon Neutral of University” Workshop: Raising Awareness for Energy Transition
From 20–21 August 2024, RMUTL organized the workshop “Integrated Knowledge Development for SDGs Dissemination toward Carbon Neutral University Ranking”, also known as the “Carbon Neutral of University” project. The workshop aimed to increase awareness of carbon management and clean energy standards among RMUTL faculty and staff while promoting the integration of energy efficiency and renewable energy into university policies. Led by experts from the Nakhonping Energy Research and Development Institute, Chiang Mai University, the program focused on strategies to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions, develop green buildings, and promote sustainable campus energy use. This initiative reflects RMUTL’s proactive approach to transforming its energy systems and creating a culture of sustainability that supports eventual 100 % renewable energy use.
Collaborative Energy Strategy with EGAT: Laying the Foundation for Renewable Transition
On 10 May 2022, RMUTL held a strategic meeting with the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) to explore energy reduction and efficiency strategies as part of its Green Campus Development Plan. The discussion covered on-site renewable generation opportunities, energy audits, and system upgrades that could position RMUTL as a national model for university-level energy transformation. Though predating the current reporting period, this meeting remains significant in shaping RMUTL’s long-term roadmap toward renewable-energy integration and green-campus policies.
| Activity / Event | Promoted Theme | Stakeholders / Participants | Timeframe |
|---|---|---|---|
| MoU with three private-sector partners to create a “Green University” | Collaborative development of clean energy (solar) and green mobility systems (EVs) | RMUTL, private-sector energy and technology companies | 15 Oct 2024 |
| “Carbon Neutral of University” Workshop | Promoting awareness and policy direction for renewable energy and carbon management | RMUTL faculty, administrators, and experts from CMU | 20–21 Aug 2024 |
| Strategic Meeting with EGAT | Energy-use reduction, renewable energy feasibility, and efficiency strategies for green campus | RMUTL management and EGAT representatives | 10 May 2022 |
Between 2022 and 2024, RMUTL has laid strong foundations for a transition toward 100 % renewable energy through partnerships, training programs, and energy-policy collaborations.
- The Green University MoU (2024) represents a forward-looking partnership to integrate solar and electric mobility technologies.
- The Carbon Neutral University workshop (2024) builds awareness and institutional capability for clean energy adoption.
- The EGAT collaboration (2022) provides the strategic groundwork for campus-wide renewable transformation.
Although RMUTL has not yet made a formal external pledge to achieve 100 % renewable energy, these activities clearly demonstrate its direction, intention, and leadership in advancing a renewable-energy agenda that extends beyond the campus—engaging both private and governmental sectors in the journey toward a sustainable energy future.
